My First Doll

Got my first doll last year,
From my mother,
Made by my Mom.

Took close to six decades to reach me,
By way of my cousin.
Made for her when she was young.

Long brown yarn hair,
Green thread eyes,
Little nose,
Hand-stitched smile,
that looks like my Mom’s grin.

Handmade dress,
Border of red.

She has her own doll,
identical in every detail.

This is a gift to me from my Mom,
across time and space.
Each stitch sewn by hand with love.

I feel my mother,
looking over me,
when I look at this doll.
